Defined benefit pension schemes
Defined benefit schemes provide a pension based on an employees final pensionable salary calculated against the number of years of employment or years of membership within the pension scheme.
An employer with a defined benefit scheme makes an ‘open-ended’ monetary commitment to guarantee employees with pension benefits.
Types of defined benefit schemes include final salary pensions, added years additional voluntary contribution schemes and some hybrid pension schemes.
Defined contribution pension schemes
Defined contribution schemes provides a pension based on the amount of contribution paid by the employer and employee, the investment growth achieved on this money, and the annuity rates in force at retirement.
An employer with a defined contribution scheme is able to make a ‘fixed’ monetary commitment to provide employees with pension benefits.
Types of defined contribution schemes include small self administered schemes, executive pension plans, group personal pension schemes, additional voluntary contribution schemes and contracted in and contracted out money purchase schemes known as CIMPs and COMPs.
Stakeholder pension schemes
From October 2001 it has been compulsory for all employers with five or more qualifying employees who do not have access to funded or exempt pension schemes to make a stakeholder pension scheme available.
An employer with a stakeholder pension scheme ‘does not have to make any’ monetary commitment to provide employees with pension benefits.
